Sporadical: An Epic Folk Opera  2009

Picture
_ In 2009 we were delighted to be commissioned by the Forest Fringe to make a show for the Edinburgh festival. The result was a reckless, ever changing, interactive and improvisational musical comedy splashdown with puppets.

It is the Wellesferry family reunion and it is time for the younger generation to prove that the long held family tradition of telling tall tales will never die. This cardboard extravaganza, set on the high seas, sheds light on the bizarre and fantastical history of how the family got its name. Featuring an ambitious collection of arias, sea shanties, anthems, beat poems and a rogues gallery of Captains, Mermaids, Brides, Cads and Fisher Boys.

After its two week run at the Forest Café during the Edinburgh Festival (where it was nominated for the Total Theatre Award for Music and Theatre) it transferred to the Battersea Arts Centre café  for the Story Telling Festival in March 2010.  We hoisted its sails later that year for Mayfest in Bristol and gave it a final send off at the Secret Garden Party that summer.

_ Being made redundant is never easy, especially in a time of financial crises, political apathy and (literal) global meltdown! Yet amidst this sorry state of affairs two unassuming candidates find themselves the unlikely heroes of a revolution. A really important revolution! But they can’t do it alone.

Inspired by a certain “audacity of hope” and the helping hand of a stranger (this could be you), you could find yourself just a hairs breadth away from

serious and lasting change. H.E.L.P/H.O.P.E: to see you there,

                  Yours faithfully,
                                          Ruth & Martin.

Performed at BAC, Shunt Vaults, Mayfest and the Docklands Museum 2009

Extraordinary Ordinary

Picture
In an office bustling with ‘things to do’, how could you possibly find yourself inventing mischievous games and folding paper into flightless birds? But this is exactly what Martin and Ruth do.

Little Bulb Theatre presents a stark cubicle-world carved out of paper, stationary and the outpourings of their endearingly awkward minds. This isn’t a play about how dull it is to live in an office – this is a 9 til 5 adventure.

Told through a mixture of farcical choreography and touching imagery, 'Extraordinary Ordinary' is a celebration of everything hum-drum, a bittersweet comedy of two characters exploring the loneliness of modern-day city living and the extraordinary, sometimes heartbreakingly ordinary, ways of surviving it.

Performed at the 2008 Fringe Festival and later at the Shunt Vaults 2009
